Proper gear is the foundation of an enjoyable skiing experience.

The right equipment is essential for enjoying cross-country skiing. While our staff will always assist you with the final selection, this guide explains the basic logic for choosing your gear.

Choosing Your Skis #

Ski selection criteria vary significantly depending on your preferred skiing style.

Classic Skis #

The most critical factor for classic skiing is the skier’s weight.

  • The Logic: The grip zone in the middle of the ski must press against the track during the kick but stay off the snow during the glide. If the ski is too stiff for your weight, you will lack grip. If it is too soft, the ski will not glide well.
  • Length: Typically your height plus 20–25 cm.
  • Importance of Weight: Always provide your weight accurately so we can find a ski with the optimal tension for you.

Skate Skis #

For skating, the length and the skier’s skill level are the most important factors.

  • The Logic: Skate skis are shorter and stiffer than classic skis and do not feature a grip zone.
  • Length: Typically your height plus 10–15 cm.
  • Skill Level: Beginners usually find shorter skis easier to handle and maneuver. More experienced skiers often benefit from longer skis, which provide better stability and a longer glide.

Boot Size – Comfort and Circulation #

A ski boot should never be too small or restrictive.

  • Toe Space: Your toes should be able to move freely inside the boot.
  • Warmth: If the boot is too tight, blood circulation in the foot is restricted, causing your feet to freeze quickly.
  • Selection: Choose a size that accommodates a thin merino wool sock. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one.

Pole Length #

The correct pole length ensures an efficient push and prevents unnecessary shoulder strain.

Style Formula Recommended Height
Classic Height x 0.83 To shoulder level
Skate Height x 0.90 To chin or nose level
